Logical and physical volume

In simple words, LVM is nothing but logical management of disks on system.

System administrators might be more interested in this topic rather than application developers but it’s always good to know little bit of system administration too.

Why do we need LVM?
What are its advantages?
How to go about partitioning the disk and using LVM to manage the disk?

All the above questions are answered by following two articles.

1. http://tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/whatislvm.html
2. http://linuxconfig.org/Linux_lvm_-_Logical_Volume_Manager

Second article has step by step process on how to manage the disk using LVM. All the finer details are covered in the links provided above. So i am not explaining here else it would be a copy and paste.
